History of The Empire

The Empire Cinema opened in 1921 and was owned and operated by Rothwell Empire Ltd, the cinema offered seating for 750, bookings had to be made at the hall. The Empire offered one show nightly and the prices were between 4d and 10d per person.

The Empire featured a projector width of 28ft, it's telephone number was Lofthouse Gate 7169.

The Empire Cinema also housed a Fish & Chip shop and DIY store at the front of the building, where the takeaway is now. One of the cinema original projectionists is still a customer of ours today!

The Empire was closed to film in 1964 and was unused until 1967 where it was then opened as a bingo hall, for many years the call of 'house' echoed the building.

The period of time between The Empire being a bingo hall and becoming the establishment it is now is somewhat a little sketchy. We understand for a period of time it was a Children's Nursery, and for a period of time it became a carpet store. Sadly we have been unable to find out any further details, if you are aware of any more of the history of The Empire then we would very much appreciate any information and/or pictures that you may have, please email these to us at

In 1995 the idea was conceived to open the first ever drive through Fish & Chip takeaway in the UK and more than likely in the World, along with a 'themed' restaurant and take away. The idea was born and the Empire Fish & Chip restaurant, takeaway and drive through was opened amongst much hype. The movie themed restaurant was highly talked about when it first opened and was even featured on the 'Big Breakfast' show for the most amount of Fish & Chips served in an hour.

Below is a short film depicting Outwood past and present, it features The Empire and will be a walk back in time for the elderly and a history lesson for the young.

In December 2001 the late Brian Cooper and his wife Sheila purchased the Empire bringing with them to The Empire many years of experience within the Fish & Chip trade. Brian and Sheila had owned and managed many Fish & Chip takeaways throughout West Yorkshire since they were first married. Many of the staff whom were working at The Empire when Brian and Sheila took over are still employed within the business. Brian and Sheila fully intended to continue and improve on the theme of the Empire maintaining the ambience of its routes as a cinema as much as possible.

Since Brian passed away Sheila, along with her Management and Staff of The Empire, continued to run the business as it always has been until in April 2015 when Sheila decided it was time to begin her well-earned retirement. The business was taken over by Mr. S Paley whom has retained the Management Team and Staff, they all continue to run the business as it always has been offering the highest quality Fish & Chips to all their customers at very fair and reasonable prices.

Come along to the Empire to sample our menu you are assured a warm welcome from all our staff along with enjoying the theme of our licensed restaurant and, last but almost certainly not least, some of the best Fish & Chips available in Yorkshire today.
